Counting, Predictions, and Fibonacci Numbers

The students predict how many seeds are on one sunflower.  Then we count to check, 1280 seeds!?  They discover many things about sunflowers with their magnifying glass.  Some observations include: prickly stems, fuzzy seeds, missing and rotting seeds.  We had some great discussions about the sunflower’s defense mechanisms, and who stole the seeds while they were still out in the garden.  The 3rd and 4th graders figure out the pattern the seeds grow in using the Fibonacci Sequence… 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,…
